The Florida Marlins have played well enough to inch closer to first place in the NL East.
The Marlins look to secure a winning road trip while trying for a second straight victory over the Oakland Athletics in their series finale Sunday afternoon.
Florida (40-34) scored four runs in the final two innings to rally past Oakland 9-6 on Saturday to move within one game of first-place Philadelphia in the division.
After tying the game by homering off the A's Huston Street in the ninth inning of a 7-6, 11-inning loss Friday night, Dan Uggla's three-run double in the ninth off the Oakland closer broke a 3-all tie Saturday. That ultimately gave the Marlins the victory after they survived a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the inning
"It was just nice to win," Marlins manager Fredi Gonzalez said.
Though Florida is 4-4 on this road stretch that's included stops at Tampa Bay and Seattle, the Marlins have benefited from the Phillies losing six of their last eight contests to move closer to the top spot.
"We're going to keep going, play the way we're able to," left fielder Cody Ross told the Marlins' official Web site. "With everyone in the dugout, no matter if it is the seventh, eighth or ninth, we're never out of it. We know that."
Ross had two hits and homered in the eighth to tie the game Saturday, while Uggla has hit safely in five straight contests. The All-Star second baseman, who leads the majors with 23 home runs, is batting .429 (9-for-21) with four homers and nine RBIs during that span.
While the Marlins are averaging 6.5 runs in their last six contests, they'll be in for a test against Oakland's scheduled starter Justin Duchscherer (7-4, 2.08 ERA), who'll be looking for his third consecutive win.
Duchscherer allowed a run and five hits while striking out six in eight innings of a 15-1 win over Brandon Webb and the Arizona Diamondbacks on Tuesday.
"Early, we scored some runs and it gave me a little bit of a cushion, where I felt like I could go out there and really pound the strike zone," said the right-hander, who will make his first appearance against Florida on Sunday.
The Marlins counter with Andrew Miller (5-5, 4.87), who looks for another strong outing after allowing a run and six hits in seven innings of a 6-1 victory at Seattle on Monday.
Though the left-hander made 21 appearances over the last two seasons with Detroit, he's never faced Oakland.
On Saturday, Kurt Suzuki and Eric Chavez each drove in two runs for the A's (40-34), who lost for the third time in four games to fall 4 1/2 games behind the first-place Los Angeles Angels in the AL West.
Chavez doubled for his 522nd extra-base hit, passing Reggie Jackson for second most in Oakland history behind Mark McGwire (563).
Suzuki, meanwhile, who had four hits and drove in the winning run Friday, is batting .591 (13-for-22) with two homers and nine RBIs in his last six contests.
Pick: Florida Marlins
Result: Lost
